Volkswagen recalls '08 Passat and '09 Tiguan SUV (U.S)

The ever-popular '09 Volkswagen Tiguan's perceived quality among consumers is already suffering, as the automaker is recalling the new small SUV along with its 2008 Passat and Passat wagon for an engine surge problem tied into the engine computer. In all, about 4,000 vehicles need to be inspected and repaired.

Sales of the vehicles have been ordered to be halted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which are suffering from an unexpected increase in engine speeds when the AC system is in operation.

The electronic control module can incorrectly spike idle speeds when the AC compressor is engaged, which can lead to vehicle acceleration and a possible crash, the NHTSA summarized on its website. The federal body is urging drivers not to operate the AC system in the potentially affected vehicles until they have brought their vehicles in for a free fix at a VW dealership.

Owners have been warned not to use their air conditioning until their car has been checked.

No recall has been announced in Europe as yet, but concerned Passat and Tiguan owners should contact Volkswagen Customer Services or their local dealer for more information.
